Nautical
stripes are one of those effortless wardrobe staples that never really go away,
but this summer it seems like they’re around more than ever. Whether you’re
updating your work wardrobe for warm weather days, or planning an effortless
off-duty look, they never seem to date and work with pretty much everything (but
denim, shades and classic white shirts in particular). We’ve handpicked a few
of our favourite stripey pieces for summer, but you can guarantee that they’ll
last you a lot longer than that.
1. Striped hard clutch, ASOS
A
striped minaudiere take the casual appeal of stripes and brings into evening –
pair it with a loose little black dress for balmy summer evenings, and keep
jewellery to a minimum.
2. Playsuit, Chicnova
This
playsuit is a real bargain, and the kind of thing you’ll wear repeatedly all
summer. We’d add red lipstick and a slicked-back ponytail in the evening, and
scruffy beach waves during the day. With pockets at the hips, a gathered waist
and round neckline, the shape looks super flattering too.
3. Cropped shirt, Monki
Perfect
for work with a pair of high-waisted black jeans, this cropped shirt from Monki
puts a sharper spin on classic stripes. It’s a little bit country club, but the
shorter length keeps it feeling young and cool.
4. Shorts, J.Crew
If you
prefer something a little brighter, these textured shorts from J.Crew pair
white stripes with a bolder orange hue. Just add a white collared shirt and
some Ray Bans for effortless preppy chic.
5. Espadrilles, TOMS
Espadrilles
are a huge footwear trend right now, so this pair nails two trends in one. Wear
them with everything: skinny jeans, floaty skirts, asymmetric skorts and
structured dresses. And it doesn’t hurt that they’re comfortable, too.
These
sunglasses are a nod to the nautical theme if you just want to dip your toe in
the trend. Make sure you’re sporting a glowing tan (or a cheeky swipe of
bronzer) to really set them off.
7. Denim shorts, Citizens of Humanity
Ok, so
they don’t have stripes, but a pair of trusty denim shorts are pretty essential
to nailing the whole nautical vibe this summer. These ones are from Citizens of
Humanity and pretty pricey, but you can find similar pairs all over the high
street right now.
A
slightly slicker alternative to the espadrilles above, these slipper-style
loafers are just as versatile.
Equipment
do the best silk blouses, with their signature collar and old school pockets,
bar absolutely none. This striped version has a slight pyjama-inspired feel,
and will look effortlessly chic with white city shorts or smart, polished
denim.
